Horse Rescue Committed to Making a Difference in the Mountain State

West Virginia Horse Network, INC. is dedicated to making a difference in West Virginia. The members of our rescue believe strongly in offering equines a second chance for a new beginning with our efforts.  We strive to provide a safe haven for horses in need, ensuring they receive the care, rehabilitation, and love they deserve. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome horses, while also educating the community about responsible equine ownership and welfare.

West Virginia Horse Network offers a safe place to land for horses in need. We primarily receive horses whose owners are no longer able to care for them. Our top priority is senior horses, miniature horses and ponies but we can occasionally help other horses as well. We are able to provide nutritional support as well as veterinary and farrier care to help horses prepare physically for a new home. We also have spots with a few training fosters available for horses that need basic training to prepare for safe adoption. We do not accept full sized stallions or feral horses.

Rescue

West Virginia Horse Network believes that horses have purpose even if they are not able to be ridden. We wholeheartedly believe that “rideability” is not the only value that a horse can bring to the life of an adopter. Our rescue shines the spotlight on the good qualities of all horses in our adoption program. For some horses that means showcasing their skills undersaddle. But for others it means highlighting how great they are at in-hand obstacles or how much they like to be groomed. We don’t apologize for horses best suited as “Companions” because we think that is a great thing for a horse to be. If a horse is healthy, has an easily manageable health condition and has a good quality of life we believe they deserve the opportunity to be adopted into a great home.

Rehabilitate

Our rescue is committed to ensuring all horses adopted from our program receive safe and loving homes. We have a conversation based adoption process that allows us to get to know potential adopters well, and helps us to form a great relationship with those adopters. Those lines of communication allow us to provide guidance and support for the horse long after the animal has found a great home. We also maintain an adopter group on social media where people can become part of a larger network of adopters and the WV Horse Network family. Any horse adopted from us is welcome to come back at any time. Our commitment to each horse is for life and doesn’t end on adoption day.

Redefining the essence of horsemanship involves reexamining and reshaping our understanding of the relationship between humans and horses. Traditionally, horsemanship has been viewed primarily as a set of skills focused on riding, handling, and training. However, the West Virginia Horse Network perspective emphasizes a deeper connection that goes beyond physical abilities.

The idea to start WVHN was sparked when the people who would soon make up the membership of West Virginia Horse Network, INC., rallied passionately around a senior horse in need.

In December 2014 we were officially recognized as a federal 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. We have had the true honor of helping hundreds of horses find forever homes and give them the life they deserve. West Virginia Horse Network is committed to making a difference and offering a second chance and new beginning.

Our Story

West Virginia Horse Network, INC. was founded in October 2014 to help ensure the welfare of horses in the Mountain State.

The idea to start WVHN was sparked when the people who would soon make up the membership of West Virginia Horse Network, INC., rallied passionately around a senior horse in need. In December 2014 we were officially recognized as a federal 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. We worked privately during those months to build WVHN. We officially launched to the public in January 2015. Since then we have rescued hundreds of horses, provided education to the community, built a safety net program and developed strong partnerships with other rescue organizations to help maximize our impact.
